🇿🇲 CAMPAIGN WATCH | Mundubile Promises to ‘Return Power to the People’
NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has pledged to “return power to ordinary Zambians” if elected on August 13, promising an administration that listens to citizens, honours its campaign commitments and governs without discrimination.
Addressing supporters at Twapia Park in Ndola on Thursday, Mundubile said his government would not abandon voters after winning office, arguing that political leaders should remain accountable throughout their term rather than only during election campaigns.
“We are not only promising for the sake of campaigning, but we will do exactly what we are promising you today without favouritism or segregation,” Mundubile told the crowd.
The opposition presidential candidate, who was accompanied by his running mate Makebi Zulu, went further by inviting public scrutiny of a future Tonse Alliance administration. He urged voters to remind him of the commitments being made during the campaign should his government fail to follow through after taking office.
“We will always listen to you and engage you, the voters, to ensure that you are satisfied with our kind of ruling without sending the police to arrest you,” he said.
The remarks form part of a broader Tonse Alliance campaign message centred on accountability, citizen participation and criticism of the UPND government’s handling of political freedoms. The alliance has increasingly framed the election as a choice between continuity and what it describes as a restoration of people-centred governance.
The rally also witnessed a noticeable police presence. As Mundubile addressed supporters, police officers briefly moved onto the stage and nearly halted proceedings, citing concerns over compliance with the approved campaign schedule. The situation was later managed, allowing the rally to continue.
Police officers also conducted security screening for journalists seeking to cover the event, saying the measures were intended to maintain order during the campaign meeting.
