Zimbabwe has officially joined South Africa, Botswana and Namibia in a joint bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking what could become the first time four countries co-host Africa’s biggest football tournament.
The announcement was confirmed by Botswana Football Association President Tariq Babitseng, who revealed that the joint Southern African bid was submitted before the deadline. He said the four nations are confident they have the transport networks, accommodation and overall infrastructure needed to successfully host the tournament.
If the bid succeeds, the four countries would share hosting duties, with matches expected to be played across multiple cities in the region. The proposal is seen as an opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation while showcasing Southern Africa to football fans from across the continent.
The bid also comes after Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania secured the rights to co-host the 2027 AFCON, raising hopes that CAF could once again award the tournament to multiple neighbouring countries.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will evaluate all bids before announcing the successful host nation or nations for the 2028 tournament.
