HOW DID IRAN BUILD THE PICKAXE MOUNTAIN THAT HAS BECOME A PROBLEM FOR IT’S ENEMIES?
Pickaxe Mountain has turned Iran’s nuclear program into a problem American bombs cannot solve on their own:
The depth is what everyone cites.
Experts place the tunnels at 300 to 450 feet beneath solid rock, while the GBU-57, the heaviest conventional penetrator America owns, reaches roughly 200 feet before detonating.
Stacking bombs into the same crater extends that, which is how Fordow was eventually cracked.
The architecture is the harder obstacle. Iranian engineers reportedly staggered the enrichment halls across unaligned elevations, so collapsing one corridor leaves the rest intact.
A perfect penetration can still open an empty room.
And that is where the real difficulty begins.
Israel believes thousands of centrifuges were moved into the mountain last fall, while Iran’s roughly 1,000 pounds of 60 percent enriched uranium sits in a location nobody outside Tehran can confirm.
That stockpile has been loaded onto truck convoys and relocated ahead of strikes before.
So the mission stops being a question of aim and becomes a question of knowledge.
With no inspectors inside, Washington would be dropping its largest weapons on a mountain and hoping the material never left.
Iran dug deeper, and it also manufactured doubt.
Doubt is the one defense airpower has never figured out how to destroy.
