UPND PARTY CONTINUES WITH IT’S CYCLE OF SELF DESTRUCTION AND SELF DECEPTION:
HON GARY NKOMBO SHOULDN’T BE JUDGED ON THE BASIS OF LOYALTY ONLY, BUT ON THE COMBINATION OF THE TWO PRINCIPLES OF LOYALTY AND MORALITY.
By Friday Kashiwa.
During the 2021 debate of PF government sponsored Bill 10, we saw how Gary marshaled his fellow opposition UPND party members of parliament to vigorously debate against the bill until Bill 10 was defeated and buried.
That was total LOYALTY to the party and the president by Gary Nkombo.
In the meantime, those PF members of parliament that President Hakainde Hichilema is parading and glorifying today, were on the government side of the aisle who were not only, furiously supporting Bill 10, but also mocking and ridiculing Gary Nkombo.
Fast forward 2026, the UPND party in government decided to introduce and sponsor Bill 7, and when voting, Gary didn’t vote blindly but was guided by his principles and consciousness.
Because of his LOYALTY to the party and the president, Gary decided to exercise his fundamental parliamentary privileges of abstaining.
Meaning he didn’t vote against the bill and against his party the UPND, but simply abstained. He didn’t want to pretend or betray his principles and consciousness, and he also didn’t want to betray his party, the UPND.
That was, and this still remains Gary Nkombo personal as well as political asset of MORALITY.
These are very rare attributes in
our Zambian democracy and UPND politics in general.
In the meantime, those PF members of parliament that President Hakainde Hichilema has been proudly parading and glorifying today, voted with the UPND, just because the party is in government, just like the way they voted with the PF because they were in government in 2021.
These PF members of parliament have since been rewarded with adoptions on the UPND party tickets while Gary Nkombo has been publicly vilified and thrown out at the DUMPSITE, simply for exercising his LOYALTY to the Party and exercising his MORALITY by respecting his PRINCIPLES and inner CONSCIOUSNESS.
GARY respects and has always been very LOYAL to the UPND Party and the President.
But our UPND party DESTROYERS don’t want any possible reconciliation to happen between Gary and the President.
This is, therefore, the continuation of the UPND party and government with the unfortunate trend of:
SELF DECEPTION AND SELF DESTRUCTION.

Politics is about numbers, and loyalty plays a crucial role in coming up with numbers.
I don’t think it would have been an issue if Garry Nkombo abstained or voted against something minor, like the law on assembly, that the president later returned.
But that can’t be the case on something significant for the party such as Bill 7; do you REALLY understand what the impact on UPND would have been, had that Bill NOT gone through? The chances of losing the 2026 election WOULD have been higher. And an experienced MP, like Garry Nkombo, should have known this, or he was aware and was deliberate.
