You’ve to tell us where you’re sleeping – Police

POLICE on the Copperbelt have instructed members of the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance to disclose where they are spending the night so officers can allegedly provide security following an attack on their camp that the Alliance blames on suspected UPND cadres.

The directive came after violence erupted at Sherbourne Hotel in Kitwe, where the Alliance says several vehicles were damaged and a number of supporters were injured.

Alliance member Binwell Mpundu has accused the Zambia Police of failing to protect his team, asserting some members remain hospitalised after what he described as an unprovoked attack.

In a heated exchange with police officers, whom he accused of suggesting that Alliance members had stoned their own vehicles, Mpundu rejected the allegation and criticised the conduct of the officers.

“We have been at your mercy as the people who are supposed to protect us. Here we have become vulnerable. We are on our own.

“Instead of arresting stone throwers, your officers started pointing at us accusing us of throwing stones at our own cars. You want to turn the issue on us who have been victimized,” Mpundu said.

He further warned that his team would take responsibility for its own safety, arguing that the police had failed to carry out their duty impartially.

“Listen here Mr. Mkandawire, I am telling you this as a leader, you have failed to protect us and I want to assure you, we will protect ourselves. You have failed to protect us and we are going to protect ourselves,” he said.

In response, officer Mkandawire told Mpundu that his team should tell officers where they were lodging, a suggestion Binwell vehemently declined saying it was for security reasons.

Mpundu further expressed shock that senior officers would fail to know where opposition figures are lodged even without telling them.

The Alliance alleges that suspected UPND cadres attacked the campaign team of Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu at Sherbourne Hotel in Kitwe, leaving several vehicles damaged and multiple supporters injured.
