Trump’s own aides admit he’s more erratic than ever as his Iran war corners him
Trump has boxed himself into a war he cannot win and cannot cleanly exit, and even his own aides are now admitting he is coming apart under the pressure.
As prices climb and Americans sour on the war he and Israel launched on February 28, the president’s staff have described him to the New York Times as more “erratic” than usual. His inability to find a face-saving way out has left him frustrated and prone to abruptly reversing himself.
That whiplash was on full display Friday. The self-described “peace president” mused about escalating to “knocking out everything they have,” then in the same breath called making a deal the “smarter strategy,” insisting yet again that Iran wants to negotiate. For months he has claimed talks were ongoing and that Iranian leaders have “had enough,” while the conflict never actually winds down.
The bill is staggering too. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress the war has already cost $37.5 billion, then turned around and asked lawmakers for another $67 billion to keep it going. That is real money, pulled from real priorities, to fund a war the president cannot even explain a strategy for.
This is where it has all led. A ballooning price tag, a president flip-flopping by the hour, and a staff so rattled they are venting to reporters that their own boss is out of control. Trump promised he was the man who could end wars. Instead he is stuck in one of his own making, changing his story every time someone asks him how it ends.
