PHAKEL’UMTHAKATHI CALLS FOR KWAZULU-NATAL TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT STATE, SAYS THE PROVINCE SHOULD GOVERN ITSELF
Activist Phakel’umthakathi has renewed his call for KwaZulu-Natal to become an independent state, arguing that the province should have greater control over its own affairs.
Speaking at a public gathering, he said KwaZulu-Natal has the resources and potential to govern itself independently. He believes greater autonomy would allow the province to make its own decisions on issues such as economic development, governance and public services.
His remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some supporters saying provinces should have more powers, while others argue that South Africa’s unity and constitutional framework should remain intact.
Any move towards independence would face significant legal and constitutional hurdles, as South Africa’s Constitution does not provide a simple process for a province to secede from the country.
