HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER LEON SCHREIBER SAYS GOVERNMENT WILL OPPOSE CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA’S IDENTITY CASE AS LEGAL BATTLE HEADS TO COURT
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says the Department of Home Affairs will oppose former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina’s court application regarding her identity documents.
Speaking on the matter, Schreiber said the fact that the case is before the courts demonstrates that South Africa’s legal system allows everyone the right to challenge government decisions through the courts, regardless of the outcome.
The minister said the department will present its case in court and believes the legal process should determine the matter. The dispute centres on Adetshina’s identity and related Home Affairs decisions, which have attracted widespread public attention over the past year.
The case is expecffted to clarify important legal questions surrounding citizenship, identity documentation and the powers of the Department of Home Affairs. A final decision will ultimately rest with the court after hearing arguments from both sides.
The outcome could have significant implications not only for Adetshina but also for how similar identity and citizenship disputes are handled in South Africa in the future.
