GOVERNMENT WELCOMES ARRESTS IN COPPER THEFT CASE

Government has welcomed the action taken by law enforcement to investigate individuals alleged to be involved in the theft and unlawful handling of copper cathodes recovered in Mufulira District.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, says government considers the protection of national resources, public assets, and private property as fundamental.

He notes that it is government’s responsibility to ensure all acts of criminality are dealt with in accordance with the law.

Kawana states that this is important in strengthening accountability, transparency, and good governance by ensuring allegations of wrongdoing are subjected to thorough investigations.

He adds that the law applies equally to all citizens, remarking that no individual is above the law.

Kawana adds that public trust in national institutions can only be sustained when accountability is upheld and when those entrusted with responsibilities act with the highest standards of integrity.

He cautions that there will be no tolerance for theft, corruption, abuse of authority, or any conduct that undermines Zambia’s economic interests.
