EXPLOSION AT ELITE MOSCOW RESTAURANT NOW LINKED TO REPORTED GATHERING OF TWO RUSSIAN GENERALS
The mystery surrounding the explosion at Balzi Rossi, one of Moscow’s most exclusive restaurants, continues to deepen.
Earlier, it was confirmed that the restaurant had been closed for a private banquet. Initial reports suggested it may have been a wedding, but new information paints a different picture.
According to independent Russian outlet ASTRA, citing an eyewitness, the banquet was reportedly a birthday celebration for Russian generals. The witness claimed numerous vehicles with black military license plates—typically used by the Russian Armed Forces and other security agencies—were parked outside the restaurant. A Rosgvardia bus was also reportedly seen nearby, although ASTRA notes that this detail has not yet been independently verified.
Ukrainian activist Serhii Sternenko later identified the two generals whose birthdays reportedly fell on the same day:

Selyostrov commanded Russia’s 106th Guards Airborne Division (VDV), one of the country’s elite airborne formations.
His division played a key role during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, including operations aimed at advancing toward Kyiv during the opening weeks of the full-scale invasion. The 106th VDV has since remained heavily involved in combat operations across Ukraine and has earned a reputation as one of Russia’s principal assault formations.
• Lieutenant General Alexander Yaroshevich
Yaroshevich serves as Head of the Department of Transport Support within Russia’s Ministry of Defense.
While his position is less visible than that of a frontline commander, it is strategically important. Military transport is the backbone of any army, overseeing the movement of fuel, ammunition, heavy equipment, personnel, and supplies across Russia’s vast logistics network. Officers responsible for transportation play a crucial role in sustaining military operations.
If these reports are accurate, the gathering would have brought together both operational military leadership and senior logistics command under one roof.
Questions also remain about the explosion itself.
Pro-Kremlin outlet Mash attributed the blast to a gas leak, but that explanation has been challenged. According to ASTRA, people familiar with the building have claimed the restaurant is not connected to a gas supply, though that assertion has also not been independently verified.
At this point, there is no official confirmation that either general was present inside the restaurant when the explosion occurred, nor have Russian authorities identified the attendees or announced the cause of the blast.
The confirmed facts remain limited:
