NO APPOINTMENTS FOR WITHDRAWEE RUNNING MATES AFTER THE POLLS
Governance activist Isaac Mwanza says vice-presidential running mates who withdraw their candidacies after allegedly being promised government jobs will not be eligible for appointment if the political party they support loses the election.
His remarks follow a Constitutional Court ruling that a presidential running mate cannot resign or withdraw from an election.
And Mr. Mwanza has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s judgement delivered on July 31, 2026, saying it has set an important legal precedent on the status of presidential running mates and the consequences of withdrawing from an election.
Mr. Mwanza said some running mates had been persuaded to withdraw from the race after being promised appointments as ministers or Members of Parliament.
However, he said the Constitutional Court has made it clear that such individuals are not eligible for nomination to those positions.
