HE WHO FUNDS YOU, CONTROLS YOU!

Zambians funded UNIP and ensured that Zambia gained independence. In 1991, Zambians fought for themselves to ensure a return to a multi-party system. Zambians were at the centre of funding the MMD, which at the time was not a political party but a movement. They funded it, and FTJ won the elections in 1991.
In 2011, the funding for the Patriotic Front was largely from Zambians themselves. Many locally owned Zambian businesses funded the Patriotic Front. Why did that happen? It was necessary because it was a movement and a struggle for Zambians themselves.
In 2021, the UPND won the elections. We do not know where the funds came from.
Today, Brian Mundubile is asking Zambians to fund his campaign. Why is this important? When you allow foreigners to fund your campaigns, you give them power over your government. Once in power, they begin to twist a sitting president into policies that favour foreigners.
In this case, mining giants always have an interest in who becomes president and who governs the country, because they want tax holidays and tax breaks. This is why you see mining giants twisting and controlling government. Presidents end up becoming puppets of these individuals.
Why is it important that Zambians appreciate the honesty of Brian Mundubile? Because it demonstrates that this is leadership owned and controlled by Zambians themselves. So instead of mocking him, it is only wise that all of us support this cause.
In the United States — considered one of the biggest democracies on planet earth and a symbol of democracy — the law does not allow any candidate to receive funds from outside the US. No country and no investor outside the United States can fund an election campaign. It is in fact illegal, and you can be disqualified from running for the office of President in the USA. Why? To protect their independence, sovereignty, and autonomy as a government.
And here in Zambia, when your colleague Brian Mundubile says, “Let’s fund our own campaign,” you make noise?

Let us ask questions. Why is it that before the 2021 elections, the UPND condemned Vedanta as a bad employer and a bad mining investor? After they won, HH appointed and brought back the same Vedanta to run KCM and Mopani. Why has that happened? These are the questions we need to begin asking ourselves.
So the question is: Where did the UPND get the money for their 2021 campaigns? Where did they get the money for fuel? These are issues that must be questioned. In a true democracy, you must know who is funding your campaign.
In this way, Brian Mundubile is right. It is time for all of us as Zambians to begin donating, because this is our project.
No one is going to fight for you if you are not willing to fight for yourselves! An investor will only put resources into your campaign with vested interests.
We do not want a government controlled from Washington. A government controlled from Paris. A government controlled from London.
We want a government controlled by a marketeer, by a farmer, by a student, by all the people on the streets — because they own this leadership. They own this government.
That is why we are saying the call for all of us to support Brian Mundubile is a just call, a sober call. It is a move to defend and protect the integrity and the collective aspirations of the Zambian people.
