Putin Warned That Any Attempt to Retake Crimea Could Trigger Direct Russia NATO Conflict
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously warned that any military attempt by Ukraine, backed by NATO, to seize Crimea could rapidly escalate into a direct confrontation between Russia and the NATO alliance.
Speaking about the security implications of Crimea, Putin argued that if NATO member states became involved in military operations to retake the peninsula, the alliance’s collective defense obligations under Article 5 could quickly come into play, potentially drawing Europe into a wider conflict with Russia.
Putin was quoted as saying:
“You won’t even have time to blink your eye when you execute Article 5.”
The remark was intended to underscore Moscow’s view that any attack on Crimea considered by Russia to be its sovereign territory since its 2014 annexation, but recognized internationally as part of Ukraine could lead to a rapid and dangerous escalation involving NATO.
The statement has remained one of Putin’s most widely cited warnings regarding the risks of military escalation between Russia and the Western alliance. NATO, meanwhile, has consistently maintained that it is not a party to the war in Ukraine while continuing to provide military and political support to Kyiv.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that restoring control over all internationally recognized Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, remains one of its strategic objectives.
