South African Family Rejects Russian Burial Offer, Demands Son’s Body Be Returned Home
A South African man from Gauteng has died in Russia after sustaining injuries while participating in the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to his family, he travelled to Russia after allegedly being promised employment as a driver. However, they say he was instead recruited into the ongoing conflict, where he was seriously injured. He later died from those injuries.
Following his death, Russian authorities offered to bury him in Russia and provide financial compensation to his relatives. The family has rejected both offers, saying they do not want money and cannot accept their loved one being buried thousands of kilometres away from home.
Instead, they are appealing to the South African government and relevant authorities to assist in repatriating his remains so he can be laid to rest in South Africa, in accordance with the family’s wishes, cultural traditions, and customs.
The case has renewed concerns about reports of African nationals being recruited to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Although Russia has previously indicated that it would address concerns about the recruitment of foreign nationals, allegations continue that Africans are still being enlisted through misleading job offers or other recruitment methods.
Human rights groups and international observers have documented cases of foreign recruits from several African countries joining Russian forces.
African governments should take stronger action to warn citizens about the risks of travelling abroad for suspicious employment opportunities and to investigate Russia’s recruitment networks operating on the continent
The death of the Gauteng man has also prompted renewed calls for African leaders not to remain silent on the issue.
Governments across Africa should work together to protect their citizens, demand accountability where exploitation is suspected, and ensure that nationals caught up in foreign conflicts receive appropriate diplomatic assistance.
As the grieving family waits for their son’s body to be returned home, they say their only wish is to give him a dignified burial among his loved ones—not to receive financial compensation.
