Drone Crashes Into Crowded Beach in Russia’s Gelendzhik, Killing 7
A drone crashed and exploded on a crowded beach in Arkhipo-Osipovka, within the Gelendzhik municipality of Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, on the morning of August 3, 2026, during a wider overnight wave of drone attacks.
Russian authorities reported that seven people were killed, including three children, while as many as 40–47 people were injured. At least 21 injured people were hospitalized, with several reportedly in serious or critical condition.
Images recorded by people on the beach showed the drone descending rapidly toward the crowded shoreline before a powerful explosion. Witnesses reported hearing sustained machine-gun or anti-aircraft fire shortly before the drone fell.
Russian authorities accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians. However, independent Russian outlets and military analysts cited by the report suggested the drone may have been intercepted or disrupted by Russian air-defense or electronic-warfare systems, causing it to lose control and crash into the beach.
The incident occurred near the Rassvet recreation center, reportedly associated with employees of NPO Mashinostroyeniya, a major Russian missile and aerospace company. The area is also located near a heavily secured zone associated with the site commonly referred to as “Putin’s Palace.”
Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the incident or confirmed that the beach was the intended target. Kyiv has repeatedly said its long-range strikes are directed at Russian military and energy infrastructure.
The exact circumstances that caused the drone to fall onto the beach remain under investigation, and the competing explanations have not been independently established.
