Iranian lawmaker threatens to impeach Foreign Minister Araghchi

Iranian lawmakers were gathering evidence to seek the impeachment of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, senior lawmaker Hosseinali Hajideligani said on Tuesday.’

“We are compiling and collecting documentation for the impeachment of Abbas Araghchi so that we can initiate it at the appropriate time,” said Hajideligani, first deputy chair of parliament’s Article 90 committee.

He also said that talks during the US ceasefire were inappropriate, describing the word “negotiation” as a signal for renewed war.

He said any agreement that violated Iran’s sovereignty or ceded control over any part of its territorial waters would breach the constitution, adding that lawmakers would not back down on the issue.

Araghchi has faced criticism from conservative media in Iran over a recent interview in which he discussed the wars with the US and Israel, internal security planning and negotiations with Washington, according to Iran International.

In the interview on the YouTube program “Chronicles of War,” Araghchi discussed security gaps that allowed attacks on senior Iranian officials and leadership sites and said they “probably still have not been fully resolved.”

He also spoke about contingency planning during the war, including preparations for the possible killing of the country’s leader and the government’s response to attacks on senior officials.

Mostafa Khoshcheshm, a political analyst who appears on Iranian state television, criticized Araghchi’s comments, saying the interview showed “a lack of strategic thinking” and calling it “a disaster in public relations, image-building and image repair.”
