HH condemns political violence outbreak

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has issued a fierce, uncompromising warning to political actors across Zambia, declaring that recent outbreaks of political violence are deeply concerning and will be met with the full force of the law.
The President’s high-stakes directive follows a series of skirmishes in hotbed regions, threatening to destabilise the nation’s democratic processes ahead of electoral contests.
The Head of State posting on his Facebook page today August 4, 2026, made it clear that political affiliation would not serve as a shield for criminality.
He said the ban on thuggery applied to all parties, including candidates and top-tier supporters.
“Police have a mandate to arrest any operative engaging in intimidation, regardless of their political colors,” he said.
He said every registered political party held an absolute, lawful right to campaign during timelines set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
The President framed the recent flare-ups not just as local disruptions, but as direct assaults on Zambia’s foundational values.
He reminded citizens that political freedom required civic responsibility, urging party leaders to immediately rein in their youth wings and radical cadres.
“Let us protect the peace, unity, and democratic values that define our nation,” Mr Hichilema stated, positioning national stability far above partisan victories.
With law enforcement now under strict orders to act proactively, the coming days would test whether political factions choose to heed the President’s warning or face immediate prosecution.
