ANALYST DEFENDS WAFCON TIE-BREAK RULES
Football analyst MOSES MPUNDU says the Copper Queens’ exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations –WAFCON- is disappointing but was in line with the tournament regulations.
MPUNDU told ZNBC News that Zambia was eliminated after Article 71 of the competition rules was applied when three teams in Group D finished level on six points.
He said only results involving the tied teams were considered, with matches against bottom-placed Egypt excluded from the final standings.
MPUNDU said although the outcome is difficult to accept, the Copper Queens produced a strong performance by winning two of their three group matches.
Meanwhile, Zambia Sports Fans Association Patron PETER MAKEMBO said the team’s campaign offers important lessons despite the disappointing exit.
