Iran Says It Is Preparing to Test Missiles With a Range of Up to 15,000 Kilometers
Iran has reportedly announced plans to develop and test missiles capable of traveling as far as 15,000 kilometers (approximately 9,300 miles)—a range that could potentially place parts of the continental United States within reach.
A senior Iranian official said on Friday that the Islamic Republic is preparing to significantly extend the range of its missile systems, potentially taking them far beyond the distances required to strike targets across the Middle East.
If such a capability were successfully developed and demonstrated through a credible test, it would represent a major expansion of Iran’s declared long-range missile ambitions. A missile with a range of 15,000 kilometers would be classified as an intercontinental-range system, depending on its trajectory and payload, and would theoretically be capable of reaching targets far beyond Iran’s immediate region.
Iran already possesses one of the largest and most diverse missile arsenals in the Middle East, including ballistic missiles with ranges extending to several thousand kilometers. However, a 15,000-kilometer range would be a dramatic leap beyond Iran’s publicly known operational missile capabilities.
The announcement is therefore likely to attract significant attention from the United States, Israel and other Western governments, particularly amid continuing tensions between Tehran and Washington.

That remains uncertain.
Developing a missile capable of traveling 15,000 kilometers would require substantial advances in rocket propulsion, multi-stage missile technology, guidance systems, heat-resistant re-entry vehicles and long-range flight testing. Successfully developing such a system would be considerably more challenging than simply extending the range of Iran’s existing ballistic missiles.
There is also an important distinction between announcing an intended range and demonstrating a functioning weapon. Until Iran conducts a verifiable test or provides credible evidence of such a capability, the 15,000-kilometer figure should be treated as a claim or stated objective rather than a confirmed operational capability.
If Iran were eventually to demonstrate a reliable missile with this range, however, it would represent a major strategic development and significantly alter assessments of Iran’s military reach.
The key question now is whether Tehran can turn its stated ambition into a successfully tested and operational long-range missile.
