Keith Lott, 47, collapsed during an intimate moment with his wife, Brook, at their home in Swedesboro, New Jersey.
One moment, they were trying to start a family.
The next, he was unresponsive.
“He just slumped over… I saw the foam, and I knew something was wrong,” Brook said.
She called 911 and began CPR. Paramedics rushed him to Cooper University Hospital, but the damage was severe. Days later, doctors declared him brain dead.
Within an hour, representatives connected to organ procurement arrived, the family claims, pushing to move forward with donation.
“There’s nothing to discuss,” a relative recalled telling them. “He changed his mind.”
Lott had once been a registered organ donor.
But in 2025, after converting to Islam, he removed himself from the registry—something his family says was clear, documented, and intentional.
Still, they allege they were met with resistance.
“They told us it was basically a lifetime agreement,” a family member said. “Like he couldn’t undo it.”
The family pushed back, pointing to his updated license and religious beliefs. Meanwhile, they say the hospital kept him on life support as the dispute continued—time they didn’t have, given Islamic burial traditions.
The situation escalated until a state senator’s office intervened.
“That’s illegal,” the family says they were told. “His current status is what matters.”
Hours later, the pressure stopped. Lott’s body was finally released. He was buried within days.
