In two days’ time, I will be president, says Prof. Pule

Like David facing Goliath, Daniel facing the ballot box, or Moses staring at the Red Sea and apparently deciding that traffic was not an option, Christian Democratic Party (CDP) presidential candidate Professor Daniel Pule says he has seen the promised land and it is called State House.

Lusaka, 11 August – Professor Pule, addressing journalists in Lusaka this morning, declared that Zambians should prepare themselves for a biblical-sized political surprise when they vote on Thursday, August 13.

According to the CDP leader, the result has already been handed over to a higher authority, with the ballot papers seemingly playing the role of supporting cast.

“God is the one who appoints kings and removes others. I have surrendered this election in the hands of God. You shall see a great miracle on the 13th of August. In two days’ time, I will be President. My faith is in the Lord,” Professor Pule said.

It was a declaration of faith so confident that, for a moment, the Electoral Commission of Zambia might have been forgiven for wondering whether it still needed to print the ballot papers.

Professor Pule’s prediction now places August 13 firmly in the territory of biblical suspense. If all goes according to his prophecy, Zambians could wake up to a political miracle worthy of the parting of the Red Sea, except this time the waters would be replaced by ballot boxes and the promised land would have a presidential motorcade.

But while Professor Pule is putting his electoral hopes in divine hands, he says the real enemy facing Zambia is considerably less supernatural.

Poverty, the high cost of living and unemployment, he said, are the biggest threats facing his party and the country.

Professor Pule also took aim at the management of Zambia’s mineral wealth, arguing that ordinary Zambians have yet to feel the benefits of newly discovered resources such as gold, sugilite and lithium.

“Zambia has not benefited from its newly discovered minerals such as gold, sugilite and lithium. All the money is going into the pockets of rich people. We need to mobilize all the resources,” he said.

The statement suggests that, in the CDP’s version of the promised land, minerals will no longer mysteriously disappear into the wilderness of private pockets but will instead be mobilised for the benefit of the wider population.

Professor Pule further promised that a CDP government would resist the temptation to treat international borrowing like an all-you-can-eat buffet.

“We shall not borrow unnecessarily as CDP. Our borrowing will be targeted. For example, if we need to build a road from Solwezi to Kaoma, we can borrow for that,” he said.

The party, he added, would also focus on raising resources domestically, with the long-term ambition of seeing Zambia graduate from dependence on foreign borrowing and donor assistance.

“At one point as a country, we need to look forward to a time when we are not borrowing from foreign countries or any other lenders, or depend on donor aid. Zambia is such a rich country,” Professor Pule said.

It is an economic vision that promises a Zambia where the national purse is replenished from the country’s own mineral wealth rather than repeatedly knocking on the doors of international lenders.

For now, however, the immediate test is political rather than economic.

Professor Pule has placed his confidence firmly in God and predicted that, by Thursday, the nation will witness a “great miracle.”

Whether that miracle comes in the form of a presidential victory, a surprise result or simply an exceptionally dramatic election night remains in the hands of the voters.

And, according to Professor Pule, God.

As Zambia heads to the polls, therefore, the country has been presented with a proposition that would make even the prophets pause: vote on Thursday, count the ballots, and see whether the political Red Sea parts.
