Trump Says Iran Should Pay War Reparations
U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would seek war reparations from Iran over deaths and injuries linked to conflicts involving Tehran, including losses beyond American citizens.
Trump also said part of the payments could be used to fund mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, where U.S. forces have been involved in clearing mines reportedly placed by Iran.
The announcement comes as Iran has also demanded compensation from the United States, accusing Washington of causing damage and casualties during the conflict.
Iranian officials separately criticized the Trump administration’s continued sanctions policy, while U.S. advisers have reportedly urged Trump to avoid further escalation and allow economic pressure to affect Iran.
Global oil prices rose more than 5% on August 10 amid renewed concerns that the conflict could continue and that normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could remain disrupted.
Brent crude reached $87.81 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate rose to $82.20 per barrel at 00:13 UTC on August 11.
