WHY IS SOUTH AFRICA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE STILL RISING EVEN AFTER THOUSANDS OF FOREIGNERS LEFT THE COUNTRY?

South Africa’s unemployment crisis has deepened again, with the country’s official unemployment rate climbing to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7% in the previous quarter. The latest figures show that hundreds of thousands more people are now without work, raising fresh concerns about the state of the economy.

The increase comes at a time when immigration and foreign workers remain one of the most debated topics in the country. For years, some groups have argued that reducing the number of foreign nationals in South Africa would create more job opportunities for citizens. However, the latest unemployment figures suggest that the country’s jobs crisis may be driven by much broader economic challenges.

Economists point to factors such as slow economic growth, weak business confidence, ongoing infrastructure problems, high operating costs for companies, and limited investment as major reasons why enough jobs are not being created. Many businesses are also struggling with rising costs and uncertain economic conditions, making expansion and hiring more difficult.

Youth unemployment remains particularly severe, with millions of young South Africans unable to find work. Analysts warn that unless the economy grows faster and attracts significant investment, unemployment could remain one of the country’s biggest challenges for years to come.

The latest figures have reignited a national debate: if the unemployment rate is still rising despite tighter immigration measures and continued pressure on undocumented workers, what is the real solution to South Africa’s jobs crisis?

Do you think unemployment is mainly caused by immigration, or are deeper economic problems to blame?
