Trump Left His Own Cabinet Behind While He Escaped With Aides on Decoy Jet
Trump made sure his inner circle came with him when he secretly slipped away from a real assassination threat, while some of his own top officials were left in the dark.
The Washington Post reported that when Trump fled a NATO summit on a decoy military flight over a credible Iranian threat, he brought along a small group from his personal inner circle, including longtime aide Natalie Harp, Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, and Oval Office operations director Walt Nauta. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, top aide Stephen Miller, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent all stayed behind on the plane Trump believed was the actual target.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was reportedly positioned to walk up the staircase in a way designed to make him look like the senior-most official on board, even though the president himself was nowhere near that flight.
Journalists traveling with the administration were never told about the threat at all. It is still unclear whether Trump’s own top officials even knew they had been left on a different plane than the president.
When a reporter finally asked Trump about it directly, his explanation didn’t hold up. He claimed the plane he flew on was actually the one at greater risk, the opposite of what “equal safety,” his own stated justification, would suggest.
This wasn’t a decision driven by protocol or chain of command. It was Trump choosing who he trusted enough to save, and who he was willing to leave behind without so much as a warning.
