UNITED STATES: “I Can Kill You”: Driver Arrested After Screaming Death Threats at Black Mom and Toddler on NC Freeway
A white driver who hurled death threats at a Black mother and her toddler on a North Carolina freeway has finally been arrested.
On August 7, Greensboro police charged Christopher John Walters, 48, after his July 31 road-rage outburst went viral. He faces one count of misdemeanor communicating threats.
In the video, Walters repeatedly yelled “You will die” and “I can kill you” at Myeka Dunn. Her 3-year-old was in the back seat.
Dunn told The NC Beat that Walters cut her off and nearly hit her car. When she honked, he slammed on his brakes and did it again. That’s when she pulled out her phone to record.
She called 911 and said she had video evidence of death threats. Police issued a public warning and said an officer would be sent. But Dunn says when she followed up, police told her little could be done because they didn’t witness it.
Frustrated, Dunn posted the video online. It was viewed tens of thousands of times.
On August 5, the Greensboro Police Department posted on Instagram that they were “aware of viral videos” and had spoken to Dunn.
“A detailed report is now on file,” they said. “The suspect in this incident has been identified, and the victim was advised on how to obtain a warrant on a misdemeanor charge from the Magistrate’s Office due to the incident occurring outside the presence of officers.”
Residents pushed back in the comments.
“Do suspects have to arrest themselves too?” one asked.
“So as long as cops don’t see it happen, crime is legal in Greensboro? Sweet!” another wrote.
“What about video evidence? If it’s good enough to charge using Flock cameras, our videos should be acceptable as well. It’s called an investigation, people.”
Dunn is relieved charges were filed.
Police said Walters was already in custody the day after the freeway incident on a separate charge. He allegedly assaulted a different woman by pushing her into a dresser, leaving her bruised.
A judge set bond at $1,500. Walters is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 8.
