The South African Department of Home Affairs has formally requested reimbursement from Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria after spending nearly 18 million dollars on deporting over 80,000 African migrants.
Officials explained to lawmakers that the money was spent on bus transport, temporary holding facilities, and heavy staff overtime.
This is the equivalent of forcefully throwing a guest out of your house and handing them an invoice for the wear and tear on your front door.
While Home Affairs claims it spent millions on transport logistics, several affected countries had to charter their own flights and hire private buses just to fetch their stranded citizens.
Even religious figures like Prophet Shepherd Bushiri ended up hiring buses to evacuate Malawians because official deportation systems were moving at a glacial pace.
Yet South Africa is now turning around to ask foreign governments to pay for the operational cost of its own domestic immigration enforcement.
If a government decides to round up tens of thousands of people, detain them, and bus them to the border, that is a local policy decision, not an international subscription service.
Sending an invoice to Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Malawi for deportation expenses is peak diplomatic comedy from a country that claims to promote continental integration.
Next, Home Affairs will probably send a bill to neighboring countries for the electricity used in holding facilities during the deportation process.
