IRAN JUST TOLD FRANCE TO STOP LECTURING THE WORLD ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS
Iran’s Foreign Minister Araqchi has delivered a direct message to France and countries like it.
Stop preaching about human rights and international law. Your support for what is happening in Gaza and your backing of attacks on Iran have destroyed any moral authority you thought you had.
He called it blatant and shameful hypocrisy.
He is not wrong about the contradiction.
France positions itself as a defender of international humanitarian law. French diplomats write speeches about civilian protection, war crimes, and the rules based international order. France sits on the UN Security Council and votes on resolutions about global peace and security.
The same France supported Israeli military operations that killed tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza. The same France that has not been neutral in the US-Iran conflict. The same France that was just expelled from Burkina Faso for what the Burkinabè government described as interference and support for destabilising elements.
When a country’s actions consistently contradict its stated values the credibility of those values collapses.
This is not a defence of everything Iran does. Tehran has its own human rights record that deserves scrutiny. The Iranian government has imprisoned journalists, suppressed protests, and executed dissidents.
But the specific argument Araqchi is making is accurate. You cannot champion international law selectively. You cannot apply it to your adversaries and exempt your allies. When you do that you are not defending principles. You are using principles as a weapon.
France, Britain, America, and the entire Western bloc that lectures the Global South about governance, democracy, and human rights while supporting or ignoring atrocities committed by their allies have a credibility problem that no press release can fix.
Araqchi said what millions across the Global South have been thinking.
