The media team of Mr. Xavier Chungu, former presidential candidate for the Liberal Democrats Party, wishes to address a false story spreading on social media.
We have seen posts claiming that Mr. Chungu has died at Kabwata Remand Prison after being tortured by authorities. We want to state clearly that these reports are completely untrue.
Mr. Chungu is in good health. He remains strong and in high spirits despite his ongoing detention . His legal team has been in regular contact with him.
We call on members of the public to use social media responsibly. Spreading false information causes unnecessary panic and distress to Mr. Chungu’s family, friends and supporters. It also damages public trust.
We urge everyone to verify any news before sharing it. If you see claims about Mr. Chungu’s health or any other matter, please check with our official channels for confirmation.
Background for the Public
Mr. Chungu was arrested on 28th May 2026 and has remained in custody since then . He was granted bail by the High Court on 4th June but was rearrested shortly afterwards on additional charges .
On 12th July 2026, Mr. Chungu withdrew from the presidential race while remaining in custody . His legal team is handling his case through the proper legal channels.
