Winfrey gave both men their start decades ago, introducing Dr. Phil McGraw as a relationship expert in 1988 and Dr. Mehmet Oz in 2004, launching two of the most recognizable names in daytime TV. Both have since aligned themselves closely with Trump and MAGA politics, a turn that has nothing to do with the woman who gave them their first shot.
Asked directly about the criticism she’s faced over the years, Winfrey didn’t dodge it. “Everybody has their own path in life, and it has not one thing to do with me, and I don’t have one thing to do with them,” she said plainly. She explained that when she brought both men onto her show, it was because she genuinely believed they had valuable, practical information to share, information that had helped her personally and that she thought could help her audience too.
It’s a fair and honest answer, and it’s worth remembering where Oprah herself has stood the whole time. She publicly endorsed and campaigned for Kamala Harris in 2024, delivering a prominent speech at the Democratic National Convention. People grow, change, and sometimes go down very different roads than the people who gave them their start, and Oprah made clear she’s not going to carry blame that was never hers to begin with.
