KARIBA BOAT TRAGEDY: DEATH TOLL RISES TO 46
DEATH toll in the Kariba RIDA boat tragedy has risen to 46, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed
In an update issued this afternoon, police said the latest figure represents victims who perished in the RIDA boat accident on Lake Kariba.
The ZRP said the names of those who died will be released in due course, as authorities continue the process of formally identifying the victims and notifying their families.
The tragedy has triggered an extensive search-and-rescue operation involving police, military divers and other emergency teams as authorities continue efforts to account for those still missing.
The boat, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), capsized on Lake Kariba earlier this week, leaving scores of passengers missing and sparking one of Zimbabwe’s worst recent maritime disasters.
The rising death toll has intensified questions surrounding the vessel’s condition, passenger numbers, safety measures and the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Authorities have urged the public and relatives of missing passengers to rely on official updates as identification and recovery operations continue.
The death toll now stands at 46.
