SPAIN: Spanish Activist Who Hosted Migrant in Her Home Says She Was Forced to Flee After Abuse and Squatting
A Spanish left-wing activist who took a North African migrant into her home says she has now lost control of it.
Estíbaliz Kortazar, from Basauri, rented a room to the man out of solidarity. According to her, the situation quickly deteriorated. She alleges he sexually harassed her, repeatedly insulted her calling her “puta” and “perra sucia,” watched pornography in shared spaces, stopped paying rent, and refused to leave when asked.
When she called police, officers told her they could not intervene without a court eviction order. The man effectively took over the small apartment.
Kortazar says she eventually fled her own home out of fear. She is now staying with relatives and receiving psychological treatment after suffering a nervous breakdown
She has launched a petition calling for faster legal processes so she can regain her property.
