Nine Arrested in Matero Over Polling Agent Murder
The Zambia Police Service has confirmed multiple arrests linked to isolated incidents during and after the August 13 General Elections.
In Matero, Lusaka Province, police apprehended nine suspects in connection with the alleged murder of Lovemore Chishima, 57, a polling agent who was assaulted at Kasamba Polling Station and later died. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
This is according to a statement issued by Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba.
In a separate operation, police detained six male suspects found in possession of offensive weapons, 22 rounds of ammunition, and a Toyota Land Cruiser.
Authorities say they are seeking Sean Tembo to assist with investigations into the matter.
Elsewhere, in Kalomo, Southern Province, one suspect was arrested after four people were assaulted, including one victim who sustained a gunshot wound. A firearm and ammunition were recovered
Police in Kasama, Northern Province, are investigating an attack on the residence of Acting Permanent Secretary Beauty Undi‑Phiri, allegedly carried out by armed supporters of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP). One suspect has been apprehended.
Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says while the overall conduct of the elections was peaceful, these incidents are receiving serious attention.
He warned against incitement, unlawful activities, and the spread of false information, urging citizens to remain calm and allow the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to professionally manage and declare results.
