UN REJECTS CLAIMS OF SUPPORTING TOONSE PAMODZI ALLIANCE.
The United Nations (UN) in Zambia has moved to distance itself from claims surrounding the 2026 presidential election after the Toonse Pamodzi Alliance indicated that the UN was supporting or helping its campaign.
In a press release issued on Friday, the UN said it had taken note of “false and misleading information” circulating on social media, including claims suggesting that UN observers had congratulated a presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and guarding him following the 13 August 2026 elections.
The UN made it clear that it did not deploy election observers for the 2026 elections and therefore has no basis to endorse, guard, congratulate or comment on the outcome of the presidential elections.
“The United Nations does not observe national electoral processes unless mandated by the General Assembly or the Security Council,” said Beatrice Mutali, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Zambia.
She added that while the UN supports member states in strengthening democratic institutions and encourages compliance with international obligations, it does not pronounce itself on the validity of an electoral process or the legitimacy of electoral outcomes.
The UN also strongly condemned what it described as the inappropriate and unlawful use of UN emblems and urged the public and media organisations to verify information through official UN communication channels.
