Brazil–U.S. Diplomatic Crisis Deepens as Lula Blocks U.S. Ambassador
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has escalated tensions with Washington by refusing, for now, to approve the appointment of the next U.S. ambassador to Brazil.
Brasília has also rejected the entry of U.S. representatives who sought to monitor Brazil’s electoral process, citing concerns over foreign interference and national sovereignty.
Lula has additionally been outspoken against Donald Trump’s proposed 20% fee on vessels using the Strait of Hormuz, warning of the potential consequences for global energy markets.
The confrontation highlights a growing divide between Brazil and the United States as Brasília asserts a more independent foreign policy and strengthens its role within the BRICS and the wider Global South
Any disruption or additional costs linked to the Strait of Hormuz could push oil prices higher, increasing pressure on energy-importing countries, including nations across Africa.
The latest moves mark another step toward a broader diplomatic showdown between Brasília and Washington.
