Iranian Strikes on Bahrain Base Reportedly Complicated U.S. Navy Operations, New York Times Says
Iranian missile and drone strikes on a key U.S. naval facility in Bahrain reportedly created major logistical difficulties for the U.S. Navy and contributed to mounting strains aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, according to recent revelations reported by The New York Times.
The report says Iranian attacks severely damaged Naval Support Activity Bahrain, a critical logistics and support hub for the U.S. 5th Fleet, which has operated from Bahrain for decades.
With the facility reportedly unable to function at its normal capacity, the Pentagon was forced to redirect parts of its logistical supply chain toward Diego Garcia, the strategically located U.S.-UK military facility in the Indian Ocean.
The alternative supply route reportedly added roughly 3,500 kilometers between key logistics points and the waters around the Gulf of Oman, significantly complicating the process of resupplying U.S. forces operating in the region.
The disruption allegedly had consequences for personnel aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines reportedly spent around nine months deployed without a port call.
According to the report, prolonged deployment and logistical difficulties were accompanied by a series of problems aboard the carrier, including food shortages, contaminated water, plumbing failures and mold-related issues in showers.
The reported conditions have renewed questions over the impact of Iran’s attacks on the U.S. military’s regional logistics network and the ability of American forces to sustain prolonged operations after critical infrastructure in the Gulf was damaged.
The developments also underscore the strategic importance of Bahrain, which serves as a central hub for U.S. naval operations and logistics across the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and wider Middle East.
