NRPUP Presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has appeared to concede defeat in the 2026 General Election, despite the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) yet to announce the final Presidential results.
Mundubile made the remarks during an interview with an international media outlet, where he discussed the election outcome and his political future as the ECZ continues the tallying and verification process.
His comments have been interpreted as an indication that he accepts that he has fallen short of securing the Presidency, although the ECZ remains the only institution mandated to officially declare the winner.
Meanwhile, the latest ECZ-verified consolidated results show President Hakainde Hichilema maintaining a substantial lead over Mundubile.
With 135 of 226 constituencies verified, Hichilema has accumulated 1,544,140 votes, while Mundubile has polled 1,030,662 votes.
The figures give Hichilema a lead of 513,478 votes over Mundubile, with 91 constituencies yet to be verified and announced.
Mundubile’s apparent concession comes as the ECZ continues announcing results from the remaining constituencies, with the Commission expected to formally declare the Presidential election winner after completing the national tally.
The ECZ has continued to urge candidates, political parties and their supporters to remain calm and allow the Commission to complete the verification and announcement of results in accordance with the law.

Conceding defeat is a sign of mature statesmanship, it is NOT a sign of weakness. Zambian democracy is a beacon of hope to the other countries on the continent. It is on another level. One week from now Zambians will be in social circles, taverns alike together. Well done the two gentlemen Hon. Brian Mundubile and H.E. Dr. Hakainde Hichilema, may the good lord continue blessing both of you. You have inspired young politicians. God bless Zambia.
