UNZASU STUDENTS REJECT TRIBAL NARRATIVES OVER ELECTION RESULTS

University of Zambia student leadership have condemned social media claims by some political figures suggesting that Southern Province is tribal following the large number of votes secured by United Party for National Development (UPND) presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema in the ongoing general election.
University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) President Mwanto Kabaso says attributing the voting pattern to tribalism is misleading, arguing that Mr Hichilema’s performance is a result of intensive campaigning in the province and other parts of the country.
Mr Kabaso says the country should focus on promoting unity as the Electoral Commission of Zambia continues announcing election results.
And University of Zambia Postgraduate Association President Willard Musonda says attempts to divide the nation for political gain should be rejected, adding that Zambians have exercised their democratic right and their choice is being reflected in the results announced so far.
Mr Musonda says the election outcome should be respected, adding that no individual or group should be allowed to sow division among citizens at a time when the country needs unity.
