Madagascar’s High Constitutional Court has reportedly approved the transfer to the state of land that remains registered in the names of foreign individuals dating back to the colonial period, before the country gained independence in 1960.
The decision could mark a significant step toward land decolonization and greater national control over Madagascar’s territory.
Land remains one of the country’s most valuable strategic assets. Bringing historic land holdings under state ownership could potentially allow the government to redirect these resources toward national priorities, including agriculture, infrastructure and economic development.
