CHAMISA–HOPEWELL FEUD ESCALATES: WAR OF WORDS ERUPTS OVER OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP
The public fallout between former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa and journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has intensified, with the two exchanging sharply worded criticism over Zimbabwe’s opposition politics and Chamisa’s leadership record.
Chin’ono has repeatedly questioned Chamisa’s approach to political organisation, arguing that the collapse of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was partly rooted in the concentration of power around the former opposition leader and the failure to build strong, accountable party structures.
Chamisa has now hit back, accusing Chin’ono of spreading “lies and misinformation” and questioning his conduct as a journalist.
In a post on X, Chamisa told Chin’ono that a journalist should report facts rather than fiction and accused him of acting as a propagandist. He added: “I have tolerated your tomfoolery for far too long. Enough is enough.”
Chin’ono, however, has maintained that his criticism is political rather than personal. His central argument is that opposition leaders should be subjected to scrutiny and that political movements need institutions, accountability and democratic structures rather than being built around individuals.
The latest confrontation comes as Zimbabwe’s opposition remains divided over strategy, leadership and the way forward ahead of the country’s next political chapter.
The Chamisa–Chin’ono clash is therefore becoming more than a personal war of words — it reflects a wider debate over leadership, accountability and the future of Zimbabwe’s opposition movement.
