WYNTER KABIMBA QUESTIONS TONSE ALLIANCE PETITION

Former Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba has questioned the Tonse Alliance’s decision to petition the August 13 presidential election results amid concerns over alleged executive influence on the judiciary.

The Tonse Alliance has announced plans to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election, citing alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

However, some stakeholders supporting the alliance have expressed concern that the judiciary could be influenced by the executive to dismiss the petition.

Mr Kabimba, in an interview, said the opposition should reconsider its approach if it does not have confidence in the judicial system.

He said it would be difficult for the alliance to seek judicial intervention while simultaneously questioning the independence of the courts.

Mr Kabimba maintained that the judiciary is an autonomous institution with a constitutional mandate to adjudicate electoral disputes.

He urged political players to respect the judiciary and use established legal avenues to address grievances arising from the election.
