GREECE AND CYPRUS REPUBLIC OBJECT TO TURKEY–NORTHERN CYPRUS GAS PIPELINE
Greece and the Republic of Cyprus have reportedly objected to a proposed natural gas pipeline linking Turkey with Northern Cyprus, calling for the project to be suspended.
Athens and the Republic of Cyprus consider the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to be part of the island of Cyprus and maintain that Turkey has occupied the northern part of the island since 1974.
The dispute highlights the continuing tensions between Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey over Cyprus, energy resources and competing territorial claims in the Eastern Mediterranean.
If the pipeline proceeds, it could further intensify the long-running geopolitical and energy dispute between Ankara and Nicosia.
