Iran Security Chief Raises Possibility of Nuclear Weapons
IRAN: SECURITY CHIEF RAISES POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING A NUCLEAR WEAPON

Tensions are escalating in Tehran after Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official, suggested that Iran could reconsider its longstanding position against developing nuclear weapons.

In an interview broadcast on Iranian state television, Rezaei argued that recent U.S. attacks had demonstrated that international treaties and non-proliferation mechanisms may not be sufficient to prevent military action against a country.

“Why should we not develop a nuclear weapon so that no one can attack us?

Rezaei also argued that a nuclear weapon could provide a cheaper and potentially more effective deterrent than maintaining hundreds of fighter jets and other conventional military capabilities.

However, Iran has not announced a decision to build a nuclear bomb. The remarks currently represent a significant political signal that Tehran could be reconsidering aspects of its defense and deterrence doctrine.

The comments come as Washington prepares additional sanctions against Iran, while diplomatic efforts between the two countries remain stalled.

Any move by Tehran toward weaponization would represent a major shift in Iran’s nuclear policy and could further intensify tensions with the United States and its regional allies.
