U.S. Warns Shipping Firms Over Cooperation With Iranian Entities in Strait of Hormuz
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued a stern warning to shipping companies and maritime operators, cautioning that they could face sanctions or penalties for responding to information-sharing requests from Iranian organizations operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
OFAC said the risk may apply even when no money changes hands, following earlier warnings that paying transit-related fees could violate U.S. sanctions.
The warning specifically concerns entities including the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz Administration and the HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority.
The move is part of Washington’s broader campaign, dubbed “Economic D-Day,” aimed at significantly increasing economic pressure on the government in Tehran.
