GOVERNMENT TO UPGRADE GREAT EAST ROAD TO DUAL CARRIAGEWAY FROM AIRPORT TO CHONGWE.
Government is planning to transform the section of the Great East Road between the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport roundabout and Chongwe into a dual carriageway, in a major infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity, easing traffic congestion and supporting economic growth along the corridor.
The proposed upgrade would see the existing road expanded to provide separate carriageways for traffic travelling in opposite directions, significantly improving the capacity and efficiency of one of the country’s important transport routes.
The section between the airport and Chongwe has experienced growing traffic volumes in recent years, driven by population growth, expanding commercial activity and increased movement between Lusaka, the airport and communities along the Great East Road corridor.
The planned investment is therefore expected to have benefits beyond simply reducing congestion.
A modern dual carriageway could improve travel times, strengthen road safety and make the movement of people and goods more efficient.
For businesses, the improved road network could provide better access to markets and reduce transport delays, while communities along the corridor could benefit from improved connectivity and increased economic activity.
The project would also complement the strategic importance of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by providing a more efficient road connection between the airport, Lusaka and Chongwe.
