IS MAKEBI ZULU AND BRIAN MUNDUBILE REALLY BAD PEOPLE?

Before you condemn them, take away the political jersey and look at the human beings.

Today, we are not asking you to support Makebi Zulu. We are not asking you to support Brian Mundubile. We are asking you to do something that is becoming increasingly difficult in our politics.

We have watched with concern as different articles and political commentaries increasingly portray these two gentlemen as bad people who deserve to be punished.

But pause for a moment.

Are they truly bad people or have we allowed politics to make us see human beings only through the colour of the political party they belong to?

Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile are politicians. They have made political choices. They have taken positions that many Zambians may agree or disagree with.

But political disagreement does not automatically make someone evil.

And opposing someone’s politics does not give us the right to destroy their humanity.

Whatever our political differences, these are two Zambian citizens who have families, friends, supporters and people who care deeply about them.

They also have a right to due process.

If serious allegations have been made against them, let the evidence be presented. Let the authorities investigate. Let the courts determine what is true and what is not.

Nobody should be declared guilty simply because the court of public opinion has already reached a verdict.

But there is a painful question we cannot run away from.

How did two experienced political figures find themselves in a situation where they reportedly sought refuge at a diplomatic residence?

If the reports surrounding their circumstances are accurate, then something went terribly wrong somewhere.

And perhaps the biggest question should not only be, “What did Makebi and Mundubile do?”

We should also ask, “Who was advising them?”

Because sometimes, the greatest danger to a political leader is not the person standing against them.It is the person standing beside them, whispering into their ear.

It is the person constantly telling them that they are destined to rule. It is the person convincing them that losing an election is unacceptable.

It is the person telling them that power must be taken at any cost. It is the person who turns political ambition into desperation.

That kind of advice can destroy a person’s life.

A genuine friend should be brave enough to tell you when you are wrong. A genuine adviser should be willing to say, “No, this is not lawful.”

A genuine political ally should protect your future not push you towards decisions that could destroy everything you have built.

If Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile are facing serious allegations, let them answer before the appropriate authorities.

If they are innocent, let the evidence clear their names. If they made mistakes, let the law take its course.

But if the people around them encouraged them to believe that Zambia could be taken by “any means necessary,” then perhaps they need to look around them very carefully.

Not everyone standing beside you is standing with you. Some people may be using your ambition to advance their own interests.

Some may be enjoying the power of your name while you carry the consequences.

And some may disappear completely when the consequences finally arrive.

This is why Zambia must be careful.

Today, it is Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile.

Tomorrow, it could be politicians from another party.

If we allow politics to turn us against one another so completely that we stop seeing people as human beings, we will all eventually become victims of the same political hatred.

You can disagree with Makebi.

You can disagree with Mundubile.

You can reject their politics.

You can challenge their decisions.

But do not hate them simply because they belong to a different political camp.

Let evidence speak.

Let the law speak.

Let the courts speak

And let history judge everyone fairly.

Because political power is temporary.

But the consequences of the decisions we make and the people we choose to surround ourselves with can last a lifetime.
