Uganda’s military chief and Museveni’s son declares 2031 presidential run, predicts 90% victory

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba  son of long-ruling President Yoweri Museveni  has announced he will contest the presidency in 2031.

In a series of posts on X late Tuesday, the 52-year-old general wrote:
“I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God

He followed up by predicting a landslide:
“With my great father, Mzee’s, support I will get 90% in the elections in 2031.”

Kainerugaba, who heads the Patriotic League of Uganda and previously stepped aside from the January 2026 race to back his father, is widely viewed as the leading potential successor. Museveni, 81, has governed Uganda since 1986 and was re-elected to a seventh term earlier this year.

The declaration puts succession firmly at the centre of Ugandan politics five years before the next scheduled election.
