What began as an ordinary journey towards Chipata ended in unimaginable tragedy on Thursday when a father and his son were killed together in a horrific road accident along the Great East Road in Rufunsa District.
Bus driver Ask Mulobela and his son, conductor Innocent Mulobela, were among four people who lost their lives when a Power Tools public service bus collided head-on with a Volvo truck and trailer in the Lukwipa area around 11:00 hours.
The tragedy has left families grieving, passengers injured and an entire community confronting the devastating reality of lives cut short in a single moment.
According to Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the bus was travelling towards Chipata while the truck was heading towards Lusaka when the fatal collision occurred.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck driver allegedly moved into the opposite lane while attempting to avoid a stationary vehicle, putting the truck directly in the path of the approaching bus.
Two passengers who were travelling in the truck also died. One has been identified as Fortune Mwanza, while the identity of the other deceased person is yet to be established.
But the death toll tells only part of the story.
Behind every name is a family now waiting for a loved one who will never return, a phone that may never ring again, and a seat at home that will remain painfully empty.
Of the 57 passengers aboard the bus, 35 sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Mpanshya Hospital.
The truck driver, 25-year-old Paul Banda of Sinda District, also sustained serious injuries and remains admitted at the same hospital.
As police continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, the Great East Road has once again become a scene of mourning.
