MOSCOW SEEKS RESTRICTIONS ON PROTESTS IN HELSINKI FINLAND REFUSES TO BACK DOWN
As Russia approaches its parliamentary elections scheduled for September 18–20, Moscow has reportedly sent a diplomatic note to Helsinki requesting tighter security measures around the Russian Embassy, including a temporary ban on demonstrations in the surrounding area.
Finnish authorities, however, have rejected the idea of a preemptive ban on public gatherings. Under Finnish law, police cannot simply prohibit a demonstration in advance without legal grounds.
Adding to the political tensions, a Finnish lawmaker from the governing majority has reportedly encouraged Russians living in Finland to take part in the election, expressing hope that the vote could lead to further public demonstrations.
The latest dispute comes at a time when relations between Moscow and Helsinki are already deeply strained, particularly following Finland’s accession to NATO and its recent decision to lift legal restrictions related to the possible stationing of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory.
The episode marks another political confrontation between Russia and its Finnish neighbor as tensions continue to rise along NATO’s northern frontier.
