U.S. SAYS IRAN CAN HAVE CIVILIAN NUCLEAR POWER BUT NOT NUCLEAR WEAPONS

The United States has said it has “no problem at all” with Iran pursuing commercial nuclear energy, while maintaining that Tehran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Washington would be willing to supply Iran with enriched uranium fuel for civilian nuclear reactors, under an arrangement similar to the model the United States has discussed with Saudi Arabia.

However, Wright argued that U.S. concerns stem from what Washington believes are Iran’s ambitions beyond peaceful nuclear energy, including the potential development of a nuclear weapons capability.

The U.S. position is clear: civilian nuclear power could be acceptable, but the development of nuclear weapons is not.
