JUST IN: CHURCH MOTHER BODIES CLARIFY ROLE IN MUNDUBILE–ZULU MATTER
Eight Church Mother Bodies have clarified that they had no mandate to negotiate a political settlement or reconciliation between Government and Tonse Pamodzi Alliance leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu.
Speaking in Lusaka on Friday, Reverend Allan Kasungami said the Church’s role was limited to facilitating the leaders’ safe, orderly and dignified departure from UN premises and ensuring their transition to their legal representatives.
Kasungami said the United Nations had also clarified that its premises were being used for UN purposes and that the presence of Mundubile and Zulu did not amount to refugee status or diplomatic asylum.
He said both Government and the two opposition leaders agreed that the Church Mother Bodies should facilitate the transition as a trusted third party.
Meanwhile, Zambia Police has confirmed recording warn-and-caution statements from Mundubile and Zulu in connection with an alleged treason offence under Section 43(1) of the Penal Code.
The Church says its role is not to determine guilt or innocence, but to promote peace, due process and respect for human dignity.
